NCBA BANK REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL GOLF AS 2026 VICTORIA CUP KICKS OFF AT ENTEBBE

Entebbe, March 2, 2026 – Uganda’s national golf team began their defence of the Victoria Cup today at Entebbe Club, with top amateur golfers from Kenya and Uganda competing in one of East Africa’s most prestigious cross-border tournaments. The four-day event, running through 6 March, features the tactical match-play formats of Foursomes, Four-balls, and Singles.

Uganda secured the right to host the 2026 edition following a successful bid, a milestone that organisers say highlights the country’s growing capacity to stage international-standard sporting events. Beyond competition, the tournament provides a platform for sports diplomacy, cultural exchange, and regional cooperation under the East African Community framework.

Entering as defending champions, Uganda will aim to retain the trophy after a landmark 14.5–11.5 victory in Naivasha, Kenya, last year. That win on Kenyan soil was celebrated as a defining moment for Ugandan golf, demonstrating discipline, resilience, and mental toughness — qualities the team will seek to replicate over the next four days.

Speaking at the tournament opening, NCBA Bank Uganda CEO Mark Muyobo reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment. “The Victoria Cup represents the pinnacle of amateur golf competition between Uganda and Kenya. As NCBA Uganda, we are proud to support Team Uganda as they defend their title. We shall also continue investing in junior and amateur golf across the country,” Muyobo said.

NCBA’s sponsorship complements its broader youth development initiatives, which provide young golfers with international exposure through tournaments such as the UAE Golf Championship, Rome Classic in Italy, and the Big 5 Junior Golf Championship in South Africa. These platforms cultivate technical skill, resilience, and competitive experience among Uganda’s emerging talent.

The tournament is organised under the Uganda Golf Union, with co-sponsors including MTN MoMo, Prudential Insurance, CBL (makers of Aquafina), NCS, and The R&A, the world governing body for golf.

Muyobo credited Head Coach Flavia Namakula with instilling a championship mindset among the squad, guiding the team to last year’s historic win. He said the Naivasha victory was built on unity, strategy, and mental toughness, a replication of which is expected this week as Uganda seeks to defend the trophy on home soil

Match-play golf demands teamwork, strategy, patience, and composure under pressure. Each shot matters, every pairing counts, and every point contributes to national pride and regional rivalry. Organisers are anticipating close encounters and thrilling competition over the four days.

With home advantage, Uganda stands to benefit from strong institutional support, and the momentum of last year’s win, in positioning itself to defend the Victoria Cup and further cement its legacy in East African golf.
